Roots & Rise: Send Our Girls to Washington, D.C.

Roots & Rise: A Black History Month Journey to Washington, D.C.

This February, we want to take 14 East Texas girls ages 12–18, along with six volunteer chaperones, on a four-day, three-night educational trip to our nation’s capital. Together, they will learn African American history as American history, and come home with a deeper sense of where they come from and how far they can rise.

Donations for this trip are securely processed through Givebutter.

    Why This Trip Matters

More Than a Trip. A Turning Point.

    History

Our girls will learn African American history as what it is: American history. Standing in the nation's capital, they will connect the stories they read about to the places where history was made.

    Confidence

Traveling beyond East Texas shows a young woman that the world is bigger than she imagined and that she belongs in it.

    Leadership

Learning about the courage of those who came before them inspires girls to use their own voices, make thoughtful choices, and lead in their schools and communities.

    Opportunity

An experience like this opens doors to new interests, new questions, and new dreams for the future, including college and careers they may not have considered.

    Community

Our group is racially inclusive. Girls from different backgrounds will learn side by side, building understanding, respect, and friendships they will bring home.
